History

The Cathedral of the Isles and other College buildings form a distinctive and attractive architectural group with a fascinating history. It has recently undergone major restoration work. The Cathedral and College are always strongly supported by the Friends of The Cathedral of The Isles who help provide facilities and equipment which might not otherwise be afforable, and who are always looking for new members.

The origin of the buildings lies with George Boyle, 6th Earl of Glasgow, who owned the island and who was a great benefactor to the Episcopal Church and the Diocese of Argyll & The Isles. He employed William Butterfield as architect to design a Church and College, opened in 1851, for daily prayer and frequent celebration of Holy Communion, under a collegiate body, in circumstances favourable to religious learning and as an educational and missionary centre, with special regard for the Diocese. In 1876, after the site had been secured, the church was consecrated and designated the Cathedral of The Isles and Pro-Cathedral of Argyll (which was the original intention).

In 1885, Lord Glasgow suffered a financial crash and most of the endowment was lost but Bishop Chinnery-Haldane was determined to retain the College and Cathedral for use as a retreat house.

From 1946 to 1948 the College housed the Episcopal Test School for Ordinands returning from war service.

From 1975 to 1985 the College housed the Community of Celebration from the USA. Now it is again a retreat and study centre .
